Bachendri Pal was the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest.

        Explanation:
Bachendri Pal is a renowned Indian mountaineer who was born in the year 1954 in a rural village in Uttarakhand, India.

She developed a keen interest in mountaineering during her college days and later joined the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi, where she trained under the guidance of famous mountaineers like Major H. P. S. Ahluwalia and Colonel Prem Chand.

In 1984, Bachendri Pal was selected to be a part of the Indo-Nepalese Women’s Everest Expedition, which was led by Ms. Arunima Sinha. The team consisted of 18 women, out of which only 8 were selected to attempt the climb to the summit of Mount Everest. On May 23, 1984, Bachendri Pal successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest along with another team member, making her the first Indian woman to achieve this feat.

After her successful climb, Bachendri Pal received several awards and honors, including the prestigious Padma Shri and Arjuna Award. She has also worked towards promoting adventure sports and mountaineering in India and has been associated with the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation, where she mentors young mountaineers.

Bachendri Pal’s achievement has been a source of inspiration for many young Indian women and has helped to break the stereotype that mountaineering and adventure sports are only for men.
