The rocket works on the principle of conservation of momentum (3).
Rockets basically expel gases and the momentum with which gases are expelled is transferred to the rocket in opposite direction. This makes rocket move upwards and till the gas is being expelled, the rockets keeps getting momentum and travels faster and faster.
