The rate of a reaction is basically increased by enzymatic catalysts and this is achieved by lowering the activation energy of the reaction.

Let us first understand what are enzymatic catalysts. We know that catalysts are chemicals that don’t take part in the reaction directly but help the reaction indirectly. In biochemical reactions, enzymes which are basically proteins act as catalysts and these are called enzymatic catalysts

Then coming to the activation energy, it is basically the amount of energy necessary to begin the reaction. Enzymes work by binding the reactant molecules to the substrate and grip them in such a manner that the bond-forming and bond-breaking processes occur more readily. This way they play a vital role in decreasing the activation energy and thus increasing the rate of reaction
